An integral part of the Bachelor's studies at the Faculty of Science, Charles University in Prague, and a required component of the State Examination, is the writing and defense of a Bachelor's thesis. These theses are developed under the supervision of the individual departments within the Biological Section and can be overseen by both internal and external supervisors (including doctoral students). The theses are of a review nature (they usually focus on a relatively narrow topic, which may or may not be directly related to the research conducted at the supervisor's Laboratory). Students choose their Bachelor's thesis topic no later than the beginning of the third year of their Bachelor's studies; however, it is advisable to start exploring the possibilities of writing a Bachelor's thesis earlier.

Currently Offered B.Sc. Theses at the Department

Besides the aforementioned selection of Bachelor's thesis topics directly in the SIS, it is also possible to individually arrange other topics, either with internal supervisors from the Department of Genetics and Microbiology or at various external institutions. In the latter case, it is advisable to consult the proposed thesis topic with one of the internal members of the Department, who, in coordination with the external supervisor, is responsible for ensuring that the formal aspects of the thesis comply with faculty regulations, and can also serve as a potential consultant. For recommendations regarding these various research institutions, please contact the respective study advisors of the Department. However, you should first have at least a general idea of the research area that interests you (e.g., virology, human hereditary diseases, cancer, cell signaling, DNA damage, forensic genetics, yeast studies ... the possibilities are endless, although, of course, there are certain research areas where it may be challenging to find an appropriate supervisor in the Czech Republic).

The rules for writing Bachelor's theses are the same for all departments within the Biological Section of our faculty and can be found (in Czech only) here.

More information about Bachelor´s theses defenses at the Department of Genetics and Microbiology can be found here.

The number of Bachelor's theses defended at the department over the past 20 years is shown in the following graph (including specification of the individual supervisory institutions). This graph is updated after each bachelor's defense period; final numbers fo each year are thus confirmed only after the end of the respective academic year:
