M.Sc. Programme Guarantors and Study Advisors

The Department of Genetics and Microbiology offers graduates of Bachelor’s programmes the opportunity to continue their studies in a two-year follow-up Master’s programmes in Czech language: Genetics, Molecular Biology and Virology with three study specializations (Molecular Biology and Genetics of Eukaryotes, Molecular Biology and Genetics of Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Microorganisms and Virology), and the Microbiology study programme. However, we also engage in some teaching for the Parasitology and Infection Biology follow-up Master´s study programme, which is in English.

It is possible to partially prepare for the future follow-up Master’s programme in one of the above-mentioned study programmes/specializations during the Bachelor’s studies at the Faculty of Science, by planning the study schedule accordingly. Recommended versions of these study plans are available in the "modrá Karolínka" (in Czech only!). However, the admission and successful completion of the Master’s programme at our Department are also common for candidates from other universities—of course, applicants must pass the entrance exams. The recommended study plans specifically for the Master’s level can be found in the faculty-wide study plans.

During the follow-up Master’s studies, the Department of Genetics and Microbiology offers a wide range of specialized lectures, practical courses and seminars covering various areas of genetics, molecular biology, microbiology and virology. A general overview of these is available here, and students can, of course, also choose from lectures primarily intended for Bachelor’s students and from the offerings of other departments within the Faculty of Science or other faculties of Charles University. The current teaching schedule for the Department of Genetics and Microbiology can be found here.

All students in both study programmes offered by the Department are also required to attend the Seminar of the Department of Genetics and Microbiology (MB140S48, MB140S48L, MB140S49, MB140S49L) in each of the four semesters of their Master’s studies. The current schedule for these seminars is available here.

The focus of Master’s studies at the Faculty of Science is the preparation and defense of the diploma thesis. Unlike the Bachelor’s thesis, the diploma thesis at the Department of Genetics and Microbiology should primarily have an experimental character, meaning that the students independently work on assigned research topics under the guidance of their supervisors and obtain original scientific results, which they will then process and interpret in a specific form. Additionally, the students must publicly present their results and their interpretation during the defense of their diploma theses, which is part of the State Examination. Given the labor and time-intensive nature of research in genetics, molecular biology, microbiology, and virology, it is highly desirable for students to begin exploring the possibility of preparing their diploma thesis as early as possible, and possibly start working in the chosen Laboratory during their Bachelor’s studies. More information on the current offerings of diploma theses, theses defended in the Department in the past, and the overall organization of defenses within the Department can be found here.

Important faculty-wide information for students in follow-up Master’s programmes (study regulations and various guidelines, time schedules, forms, instructions, etc.) is available here.
