OIT is the holder of the CESNET Fund development project “Integration of CESNET Data Services into the backup and archiving process of scientific data at the Faculty of Science, Charles University” from 2015. The main objectives of the project are to involve selected scientific departments of the Faculty of Science, Charles University in the CESNET data storage system (DÚ CESNET) for storing and archiving scientific data and utilizing other CESNET data services.

The project is also focused on creating recommended procedures for integrating CESNET data services into the entire process of backup and archiving of scientific data, taking into account their structure and usage.

As part of the project, CIT became the aggregator of CESNET data services for the faculty community and the administrator of the virtual organization (VO_prfuk) for accessing the CESNET data storage by the faculty's scientific departments.

CESNET offers the possibility of storing (for archiving and backup) large volumes of data for scientific purposes. The stored data must meet the conditions outlined in the “Rules for the Use of CESNET Data Storage Services.”

The capacity of CESNET data storage is approximately 21 petabytes (as of 04/2016). The Faculty of Science, Charles University, as a CESNET member, has reserved a portion of this capacity. The storage capacities are distributed across three geographically separated data locations: Plzeň, Jihlava, Brno, which are located near access points to the CESNET2 backbone network. The faculty uses the Plzeň location.

Faculty members interested in storing data using CESNET data storage can contact CIT through the form. CIT staff will then contact the applicant, assess the suitability of using CESNET data storage for the applicant's needs, and agree on the next steps in accordance with the methodology developed within the project.

Initiation

Applicants can express interest in this solution through the contact form, and during the initial meeting with CIT, an introductory questionnaire will be created, which will include a proposed solution and basic contact details.

Preparation

Using the solution diagram, the needs of the department are mapped with the owner, and a general solution model, including basic parameters and access protocols, is proposed. Key administrators and users are then added to the introductory questionnaire.

Construction

CIT will introduce the new project into the virtual organization VO_prfuk and, using the management interface, create the appropriate groups, introduce their administrators and members, and set up the access protocols and permissions. Additionally, a project record sheet will be created to document the progress, tools, procedures, settings, etc.

Handing Over

The completed solution will be handed over to the authorized person at the applicant's department via a handover protocol. At the beginning of the calendar year, users will prepare an annual report to gather feedback and verify functionality. This will also extend the membership in the virtual organization, which is a necessary condition for the continuation of the project.

On the faculty website, guides, news, press releases, or case studies of interesting projects from owners are published related to CESNET data storage.
