From 13th to 21st November, an international course organized by Charles University, Warsaw University and Sorbonne University in Paris took place at the BIOCEV centre.12 students from the above-mentioned universities learned the method of studying the diversity of microbial communities in the environment (so-called metabarcoding) using Illumina and Oxford Nanopore sequencing platforms. The main organizer of the course was the head of the Laboratory of the Faculty of Science of Charles University at BIOCEV  Associate Professor Vladimír Hampl, Ph.D.

39th annual Memorial of PhDr. Miroslav Bubník for the 17th November Cup in swimming relays under the auspices of the Dean of the Faculty of Science Prof. RNDr. Jiří Zima, CSc. and the Czech Association of University Sport, took place on Monday, 18th November 2024 in Hostivař. Teams from our faculty fought for the cup.

Our Faculty is proud to announce that Assistant Professor Ondřej Mottl, Head of the Quantitative Ecology Lab at the Department of Botany, is part of an international team that has been awarded funding from the prestigious European Research Council’s (ERC) Synergy Grant. This €13.5 million grant supports the international MEMELAND project, which aims to uncover how medieval land use continues to shape European landscapes today

Dr. Jan Dobeš from the Department of Cell Biology at the Faculty of Science, Charles University, has received the prestigious Česká hlava award. He was awarded by the INVENTION prize for his outstanding achievement in the field of basic or applied research in the 23rd year of the competition.

On the rainy evening of 14th November, the traditional event "Přírodovědci sobě" took place in Albertov 6, where individual student associations and other student activities are presented. The rich and varied student life is characteristic of the Faculty of Science, Charles University, which is reflected in the fact that every year new associations present themselves at the event. This year was no different.

Researchers have made a remarkable advancement in understanding how cells regulate their inner framework. The team from three institutes of the Czech Academy of Science, the Institute of Molecular Genetics, the Institute of Biotechnology and the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry, the Faculty of Science of Charles University, BIOCEV and CEITEC has uncovered the precise molecular mechanisms behind the protein MICAL1, which plays a crucial role in maintaining cell shape and movement. Researchers' findings offer a detailed insight into MICAL1’s function in controlling actin filaments—the cell's flexible “skeleton”—and open up new possibilities for developing treatments to address diseases linked to MICAL dysfunction. The study was published by the prestigious journal Nature Communications.
