A new study by zoologist Irena Schneiderová shows that the conditions in which ground squirrels live may determine the success of their conservation

The European ground squirrel is now among the most endangered mammals in the Czech countryside. While it was still common in many places in the mid-20th century, today it survives only in small and isolated colonies. Changes in the agricultural landscape, the loss of suitable grassland habitats, and intensive land use have led to a dramatic decline in its populations. For this reason, the Rescue Programme for the European ground squirrel was introduced in the Czech Republic, and conservationists and scientists are seeking ways to stabilize and strengthen its populations. Research on this species has been conducted by Irena Schneiderová from the Department of Zoology at the Faculty of Science, Charles University.
