Friday 4.7.2025

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Tomáš Kalina, our esteemed colleague and dear friend. Tomáš served as the head of the Phycology Research Group in Prague, where he devoted his life to the study of algae and inspired generations of students and researchers.

In 2003, he founded the Czech Phycological Society, leading the organization as its president for many years. His legacy includes more than 90 scientific publications and several influential books, reflecting his dedication to algal taxonomy and his pioneering work in electron microscopy. In 2006 he received the Rector's Prize for the publication “Cyanobacteria, Algae, Fungi, Mosses and Similar Organisms in Contemporary Biology”. In honour of his scientific contribution, a new species of golden alga, Mallomonas kalinae, was named the same year.

Tomáš’s intellect and kindness touched the lives of many. He will be remembered with profound respect and lasting admiration.
