The Department of Applied Geoinformatics and Cartography is a permanent part of the Faculty of Science of Charles University. The interdisciplinarity of research and interdisciplinary cooperation within the faculty represent a source of competitive advantage for this research and educational institution. Thanks to this strategy, our Faculty of Science can rank among the leading science departments in Europe.

Researchers and teachers, together with PhD students, are mainly involved in the development and use of geoinformation applications in many scientific disciplines.

Other important activities include the collection and organisation of geographical spatial data. Traditional cartography, which produces the appropriate map form for the results, still remains an integral part of research and teaching.

The department participates in the teaching of bachelor study programs in the Geography section:

  • Geography and Cartography
  • Applied Geography
    • Specialization: Physical geography and geoinformatics
    • Specialisation: Social Geography and Geoinformatics
  • Geography with a focus on education
  • Hydrology and Hydrogeography
  • Earth Sciences

It also provides teaching of the follow-up master's degree in Geoinformatics, Cartography and Remote Sensing and teaching of the doctoral degree in Geoinformatics, Cartography and Remote Sensing.​

Teaching is mainly focused on geoinformation systems, remote sensing, geodatabase systems, web applications and cartography.

With the development of the information society, geoinformatics is experiencing dynamic development, both in terms of software tools and applications. Geinformatics is profiling itself as a science that provides modern functional means for solving a wide range of problems, thus becoming an interdisciplinary research field.
