Guidelines for the defence of doctoral (dissertation) theses and state doctoral examinations at the Institute of Petrology and Structural Geology
Submission of doctoral (dissertation) thesis
The doctoral (dissertation) thesis must meet all the scientific and formal requirements set by the university or faculty regulations and is governed by the formal requirements of the Study Board.
Defence of the dissertation
The dissertation defense is conducted in English before the examining committee, members of the department, other students and guests, and is open to the public. The course of the defence is as follows:
- Presentation of the aims, method of solution and results of the thesis (30-40 minutes)
- reading of the supervisor's and referees' reports (20 minutes)
- discussion of the supervisor's and referees' comments (30 minutes)
- public questions and discussion (20 minutes)
State Doctoral Examination
The State Doctoral Examination (SDE) is closed to the public and takes place orally before an examination board approved by the Study Board. The candidate demonstrates his/her knowledge of at least two topics (chosen from a menu approved by the Study Board) relevant to his/her research activities during the PhD examination. During the SDE, the candidate must demonstrate an excellent understanding of the subject and the ability to express his/her own critical opinion.
The candidate will appear for the defence and the State Doctoral Examination in social dress. A toast and light refreshments at the announcement of the results will be provided by the candidates as they wish by prior arrangement with the Secretary of the Institute.
