Geology represents a broad slice of human knowledge of seemingly "inanimate" nature. In reality, it is an ever-evolving, dynamic world, with complex and in many ways still poorly understood contexts. Exploring this world can be a lifelong adventure for an attentive person, but on the other hand it also offers the possibility of a wide range of practical applications, since human civilisation cannot exist without links to the environment. Our goal is to explore and understand the dynamics of complex processes of the Earth as a planet and their impact on human society. Our research contributes to fundamental theories in magmatic petrology, metamorphic petrology and structural geology. We hereby encourage students, interested post-doctoral fellows and visiting scientists to further their interest in our institute. The Institute of Petrology and Structural Geology offers graduate and postgraduate students the opportunity to collaborate on a wide range of research projects.
Research at the IPSG is organised into three groups:
- Origin and evolution of magma
- Metamorphic processes along the plate boundaries
- Tectonic interpretations of mountain building processes
More information you will find in Research groups section.
