The Department of Philosophy and History of the Natural Sciences focuses on the history of the Faculty of Science of Charles University and the natural sciences in the Czech lands. It also plays a role in addressing the occasional needs of the Faculty and its external representation, including anniversary activities, testimonial activities, commemorative installations, popularization, etc. In addition to the library collection (see library), some material documentary collections are deposited at the department:

  • History of the Faculty of Science and the study of natural sciences at the CU

The collection includes a gradually expanding collection of materials on the older and more recent history of the Faculty, plates with photographic and memorial documentation and some historical boards of professors, as well as partial collections on personalities such as Alberto Vojtěch Frič (1882-1944), Bohumil Němec (1873-1966), Bruno K. Schultz (1901-1977; personal collection of publications, separates and special prints).

Two collections relating to the founding personalities of the department and the field (see history) have been created as part of past and current research or editorial projects:

A research visit is possible by personal arrangement.

It is likewise possible to contact the department's staff regarding the potential provision of any material pertaining to the history of the Faculty, natural sciences and their personalities, from private collections or other departments (correspondence and manuscripts, photographs and other pictorial material, older publications, etc.). Such documents will be evaluated, processed, and, if necessary, included in the collection or transferred to the Archive CU.

These collections may form the basis for further research or editorial projects in collaboration with the institution or as part of an individual doctoral project.
