Welcome to the EcoSpace website!

EcoSpace Lab investigates how environmental heterogeneity and the plurality of natural systems drive spatial patterns of biodiversity, with a particular focus on African ecosystems and wetlands. Our research integrates ecological and biogeographical perspectives to examine the structure and complexity of physical and ecological spaces, and how species distributions and assemblages are shaped by variation in ecological niches and behavioral strategies. We apply these insights to advance nature conservation.

Our team is based at the Department of Ecology, Faculty of Science. For studying the concept of ecological space, we use mainly birds as model organisms. In recent years, we have also included larger mammals as another model group. Our team brings together expertise in ornithology, theoretical ecology, statistics, wildlife monitoring, and GIS. We collaborate with a variety of partners from both academia, private sector, state institutions, and nature conservation. Our research focuses on three main study localities - Třeboňsko Protected Landscape Area in southern Bohemia, seasonal savannas in Southern Africa, and montane rainforest on Mt. Cameroon in central Africa.
