Project name: Importance, Change and Practical Protection of Peatlands

Provider: Interreg Czech-Poland, European Union
Number: CZ.11.01.02/00/23_011/0000161
Duration: 2025-2029
Principal Investigator: KRNAP Administration
Principal Investigator from DPGG: RNDr. Milada Matoušková, Ph.D.
Co-investigators from DPGG: RNDr. Miroslav Šobr, Ph.D., MSc. Adam Bartůšek, Ing. Věra Rokytková, Ph.D.

The project focuses on assessing the condition and preservation of the hydrological regime and natural state of peatlands and proposing and implementing measures for their protection, particularly in the context of ongoing climate change. It is essential to understand the historical and current impact of humans on these ecosystems and to take appropriate measures to prevent their further degradation. The project is cross-border, with implementation taking place in two national parks, KRNAP and KPN.

The aim of the DPGG biogeochemistry research team is to inventory the water quality of selected cross-border peat bog and to identify the main processes that control the release of natural organic substances, nutrients, and other substances in the study area in relation to changes in the precipitation-runoff regime. In recent years, there has been an increase in the leaching of natural organic substances, nutrients, Fe, Al, and other ions from peatlands and wetlands. The result will be a geodatabase of the biogeochemistry of the monitored peatland, an analysis of changes in the concentrations of selected water quality parameters in relation to the rainfall-runoff regime, and a final research report.
