Auxin is a fundamental morphogen in plants, but neither the molecule itself nor the proteins facilitating its transport between the cell and its surrounding environment are unique to land plants. Instead, they belong to a deeply conserved protein family with prokaryotic roots. Let’s speculate on the origin and ancestral role of auxin transport in living organisms!
