From July 3-5, 2026, the Faculty of Science had the great pleasure of hosting the European Amphibian Conference 2026, an international meeting bringing together scientists who use amphibians as unique model organisms to understand development, regeneration, evolution, and human diseases.  The leading figure of the entire conference was the Dean of the Faculty, Assoc. Prof. Vladimír Krylov, who also utilizes amphibians as model organisms in his own research work.

Published in PNAS, the study reveals that repeated consumption of one's own species causes a population collapse due to deadly diseases, which triggered the cultural taboo.

For the first time in history, all four Czech national parks have joined forces in a single major project. Thanks to Swiss support, they are launching the "Responsibly into Nature" (Zodpovědně do přírody) initiative for sustainable tourism and biodiversity protection. The protection of such complex yet sensitive ecosystems is impossible without detailed data analysis. Therefore, a key expert pillar of the project is the team of Dr. Dušan Romportl and Dr. Tomáš Janík from our Department of Physical Geography and Geoecology (together with colleagues from Palacký University Olomouc).

The first continental-scale Eurasian Ice Sheets

Understanding when ice sheets first developed over the northern continents is essential for attributing ice volume to marine records of global sea-level change. Researchers from Charles University and the Institute of Geophysics of the Czech Academy of Sciences lead a paper published last week in the journal Nature Communications that constrains the first expansions of the Eurasian Ice Sheet at ~ 2.4 million years ago (Ma). This work forms a key part of the PhDs of Kaleb Wagner and Lotta Ylä-Mella and features an international team of researchers from Czechia, Denmark and the USA.

Obituary: Professor Pavel Kindlmann Passes Away

Prof. RNDr. Pavel Kindlmann, DrSc., has passed away. An internationally recognized expert in population ecology and a long-time professor at the Institute for Environmental Studies of the Faculty of Science, Charles University, he was uniquely able to combine exact mathematical modeling with practical nature conservation. In addition to Charles University, he left a significant mark during his career at the University of South Bohemia, the institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences, and many prominent foreign research institutions. Honour to his memory.
