Protein MICAL1 Plays a Key Role in the Cellular Dynamics by Controlling the Cytoskeleton

Protein MICAL1 Plays a Key Role in the Cellular Dynamics by Controlling the Cytoskeleton

Published: Wednesday 13.11.2024
Researchers have made a remarkable advancement in understanding how cells regulate their inner framework. The team from three institutes of the Czech Academy of Science, the Institute of Molecular Genetics, the Institute of Biotechnology and the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry, the Faculty of Science of Charles University, BIOCEV and CEITEC has uncovered the precise molecular mechanisms behind the protein MICAL1, which plays a crucial role in maintaining cell shape and movement. Researchers' findings offer a detailed insight into MICAL1’s function in controlling actin filaments—the cell's flexible “skeleton”—and open up new possibilities for developing treatments to address diseases linked to MICAL dysfunction. The study was published by the prestigious journal Nature Communications.

HR Excellence in Research: Open Science - A path towards transparent and high-quality research at CU

HR Excellence in Research: Open Science - A path towards transparent and high-quality research at CU

Published: Tuesday 5.11.2024
The objective of open science is to make research robust and as transparent as possible. While scholarly articles used to be the most important and often the only result of research work, in an era of significant advances in IT where large-scale research infrastructures are being developed, we can now consider many other types of output – science is no longer just an article in a physical journal. The focus is turning to the sharing of data (and other parts of the research process, such as workflows or software) their reuse, and even open sharing outside the academic community. Find out more about this topic in this update.
A touch of red: mysteries of parrot colors revealed in new study

A touch of red: mysteries of parrot colors revealed in new study

Published: Thursday 31.10.2024
From the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro to the shoulders of pirates: parrots are synonymous with color for people across the world. In a new study published in the journal Science, an international consortium led by scientists from BIOPOLIS-CIBIO (Portugal) uncovers for the first time a ‘switch’ in the DNA of parrots that controls their wide gamut of colors. One of the main authors of the study is Dr. Jindřich Brejcha from the Faculty of Science, Charles University.
