Academic freedom: the role of institutions and individual responsibility in a polarized world

Wednesday 30.10.2024

We would like to invite you to participate in a panel discussion entitled Academic Freedom: the Role of Institutions and the Responsibility of the Individual in a Polarized World, which will take place on 1 November 2024 in the Patriotic Hall of Charles University from 9.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m.

The opening speech will be delivered by the Vice-Rector of the Charles University for Academic Qualifications Jan Kuklík, and then Ondřej Císař from the Institute of Sociological Studies of the Faculty of Arts of Charles University, Zora Hesová from the Institute of Political Science of the Faculty of Arts of Charles University, Hana Kubátová from the Institute of Political Studies of the Faculty of Arts of Charles University will join the discussion, Martin Potůček from the Institute of Sociological Studies of FSV UK, MP Helena Langšádlová, Director of the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Academy of Sciences Jan Konvalinka and Jan Trka from the Clinic of Paediatric Haematology and Oncology 2. LF UK.

Currently, we are facing more and more frequent attacks on academic freedom and on the very principles of open academic debate. At the same time, however, we live in an increasingly polarised world, and it is therefore important to seek answers to the questions of how the university as an institution and academics as individuals should act and respond to these challenges.

This panel discussion opens up a space for debate about the role of institutions in defending freedom of thought and expression, and the responsibility of individual scientists and scholars to enter the public space.
