Our goal is to carry out outstanding research at an international level as well as to solve a variety of problems of societal relevance. The most prominent research areas are traditionally Tectonics and Geodynamics, Petrology, Paleontology and Paleobiology, Environmental Geochemistry, Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology. Our work is carried out on virtually all continents and we have established productive collaborations and research networks with a number of domestic and foreign research institutions in Europe and the United States. Strong emphasis is placed on excellence and the global impact of our research, according to the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024, Charles University is now among the best schools in the global comparison in the fields of Geology, Geophysics, and Earth Sciences.
