Geosciences at Charles University

Geosciences at Charles University have a long tradition dating back to the early 19th century but also represent a vibrant and dynamically evolving branch of the Faculty of Science. The School of Geosciences, located in the beautiful Albertov Campus at a walking distance from the historical Prague downtown area, is now an outstanding research center equipped with advanced laboratory facilities. Our research is based on addressing the fundamental issues related to the evolution of our planet: from tectonic, metamorphic, and magmatic processes in the Earth´s crust through biotic and climatic changes in the geologic past to processes on the surface of the Earth and environmental pollution. In turn, this broad scope provides a solid background for solving complex geotechnical problems such as tunnel design, landslide monitoring, mitigation of geohazards, and geophysical prospecting. Our research teams frequently take part in major international projects and lead scientific expeditions all over the world, especially in Africa, North America, Siberia, and Mongolia. In fact, we are not limited to planet Earth: our Exobiology Group examines biomarkers and potential life conditions on Mars. The excellent research pursued at the School of Geosciences as well as applied innovations often have a global impact and are regularly disseminated through top-level international journals.
