Be a hero and give someone hope for life. Join the bone marrow donor registry on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Albertov 6, 1st floor. The registration takes only a few minutes, but it could save the life of someone who has no other chance of recovery.
Conditions for joining the bone marrow donor registry:
-
Age 18–35 (inclusive)
-
Weight of 50 kg (110 lbs) or more
-
Good overall health
-
Willingness to dedicate your time and comfort to save the life of a stranger
How does registration work?
It only takes 10 minutes: fill out a questionnaire and swab the inside of your mouth with a cotton swab.
Did you know?
-
Registering doesn’t mean you will definitely donate — only about 1% of registered donors are ever called to donate.
-
A patient in need of a bone marrow transplant often has no other hope for survival.
-
1 in 4 patients cannot find a genetically matched donor in the registry — your registration could change that!
-
There are two ways to donate: via a needle from the pelvic bone under full anesthesia, or through peripheral blood stem cell collection (similar to donating plasma — and it's painless!).
-
The chance of a match between siblings is only 25%; everyone else depends on public registries.
-
Transplant success rates are approximately 70% for adults and up to 90% for children.
Common reasons for ineligibility:
-
Long-term use of medication (except hormonal contraceptives and seasonal allergy meds, which are allowed if used for up to 3 months)
-
Leiden mutation or other blood clotting disorders
-
Asthma (unless only present in childhood), atopic eczema, thyroid disease, diabetes, celiac disease
-
A history of cancer (malignant or benign)
The following do not prevent you from joining the registry:
-
Recent tattoos, piercings, or surgery
-
Pregnancy or breastfeeding
-
Travel to exotic countries
-
Past illnesses like Lyme disease, mononucleosis, hepatitis A, or tick-borne encephalitis
