Conference Researching the Past, Advancing the Future of Medicine II

We are pleased to invite you to attend the second edition of the international conference Researching the Past, Advancing the Future of Medicine II, held at the National Technical Museum in Prague on April 9–10, 2025. This conference brings together researchers in archaeology, the history of medicine, anthropology, and related fields to explore historical insights with the potential to contribute to modern medical advancements.In addition to these presentations, the conference will include a roundtable discussion in memory of Professor Robert Arnott, where the Arnott Programme research group will be introduced.

The program will feature a diverse range of expert presentations. Natascha Bagherpour Kashani and Lena Öhrström from the Saltmen of Iran Project will share their research on the mummies of the Chehrābād salt mine. Richard Swinney will discuss medieval techniques for hip dislocation repositioning and examine historical perspectives on anticoagulants. Silvia González Soutelo will explore the role of thermalism in antiquity, offering insights into Roman baths and their archaeological significance. Nick Summerton, a researcher and author of popular science books, will address the challenges of studying ancient medicine.

In addition to these presentations, the conference will include a roundtable discussion in memory of Professor Robert Arnott, where the Arnott Programme research group will be introduced. Attendees will also have the opportunity to engage in an interactive workshop featuring historical objects and hands-on knowledge exchange.
