History of the Department

The Department of Physical Chemistry was established at the Faculty of Science in 1921, making it the first department of its kind in Czechoslovakia. It was founded by Prof. Jaroslav Heyrovský, who later received the Nobel Prize in 1959 for his discovery of polarography in 1926. Prof. Heyrovský led the department until 1952, when he became the director of the newly established Institute of Polarography at the Academy of Sciences.

Initially, the department's research focused on electrochemistry. In the 1960s, other areas of physical chemistry gained prominence. The department was renamed the Department of Physical and Macromolecular Chemistry in 1992 due to a growing interest in polymer science. Today, the department actively explores various branches of modern physical chemistry, including experimental and theoretical physical chemistry, chemical physics, biophysical chemistry, and macromolecular chemistry.
