The Department of Analytical Chemistry at the Faculty of Science of Charles University is the oldest department of analytical chemistry in the Czech Republic – it was founded in 1925, but its origins go back much further.
Study
At our department, bachelor, diploma and doctoral theses in analytical chemistry, clinical and toxicological analysis and other chemical disciplines are carried out.
Members of the department provide lectures and laboratory exercises in all branches of analytical chemistry (chemical analysis, electroanalytical, separation and spectrometric methods), toxicology and other chemical disciplines for bachelor, master and doctoral studies in all branches of chemistry, as well as geochemistry, environmental protection and teaching.
Research
In addition to above-mentioned teaching activities, members of the department are engaged in scientific and research activities, which include:
- development of new analytical methods and instrumentation and modelling of analytical processes;
- analysis of biologically and pharmaceutically important compounds;
- environmental analytical chemistry;
- development of separation analytical methods, in particular gas and liquid chromatography; and
electromigration methods; - development and application of modern electrochemical analytical methods: application to environmental pollutants, pharmaceuticals and other biologically active substances, correlation between structure and electrochemical properties of substances, development of modern electrode materials and new types of electrochemical detectors and sensors, non-contact conductivity detectors, etc.
- development of modern spectrometric methods, in particular atomic absorption spectrometry and fluorescence spectrometry;
development of modern flow analysis methods with sensitive spectrometric and electrochemical detection techniques.
