Summary of Language Proficiency Requirements

The language proficiency requirements are outlined in the general requirements of the respective subject area boards. If the subject area board requires obtaining an international certificate (FCE, TOEFL, etc.), you will need to submit such certificate to the Doctoral Studies Section of the Student Affairs division, which will subsequently record your language proficiency exam as passed in the SIS.

English Exam at the Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies of Charles University (ÚJOP)

All questions regarding the exam at ÚJOP UK are handled by Mgr. Hana Chudáčková (hana.chudackova@natur.cuni.cz). The exam can be taken throughout the academic year by arranging an individual date via email (please arrange the date well in advance).

Doctoral students, whose subject area board allows them to take the exam at ÚJOP UK, are permitted to take an oral exam (in the form of a dialogue with the examiner) focused on their field of study and doctoral research. They register the course MPGS0001 English Language in SIS. Students register for the exam date via SIS; if no date is listed, they contact Hana Chudáčková to arrange a date.

As part of the exam, students must submit written materials in English (a structured CV and a description of their research work – each 1-2 pages A4 format). These materials must be sent at least a week before the exam to the email address (hana.chudackova@natur.cuni.cz). Due to the nature of the exam, it is recommended not to take it before the end of the second year of PhD studies.

For doctoral students under the subject area boards of the Chemistry Education department and the Department of Applied Geoinformatics and Cartography, the exam is extended to include the following parts:

  • A short written test (grammar at level B2 and vocabulary from the field of science and research),
  • Studying a 10-page professional text in English (e.g., a chapter from a monograph or a scholarly article) and summarizing the text in their own words in English.
