The possibility of an individual study plan in bachelor’s and master’s programmes is detailed in article 5, paragraphs 14 – 16 of the Code of Study and Examination of Charles University. In case the student has:

  1. Serious medical issues
  2. Is registered as a student with special needs (SSP)
  3. Has a registered and approved period of parenthood
  4. Is taking care of a dependant
  5. Represents the Czech Republic in a sport

they can ask the dean of the faculty for a study period modification, i. e. the Individual Study Plan (ISP). Taking the health status, parenthood, special needs, or other relevant circumstances into account, this can translate into varying lengths of extension for fulfilling study requirements while keeping the same amount of study requirements checks as well as the same number of credits needed for being admitted to the final state examination.

A written request should be handed in directly at the department of student affairs or it can be sent via post. The request should contain information about which courses the student will take in the extended period mode. The request needs to be accompanied – depending on its precise nature – by a report written by a medical specialist or a confirmation issued by a sports organisation. If the student requests the ISP due to parenthood, it is necessary to first disclose this information to the Department of student affairs. The Notification of pregnancy / birth of a child / taking a child into custody form should be used for this purpose.

If the dean (or vice-dean for student affairs) approves of the request, the student will receive a written decision of ISP approval, which contains the precise conditions of future study and the date of registration for the next unit of study. The Department of student affairs will then modify the student’s registered courses in SIS to allow pedagogues to enter course marks in SIS outside of the standard examination period. If the student asks a pedagogue for an individual study approach, it is necessary to first show the dean’s/vice-dean’s approval of the ISP, as well as a diagnosis in the case of students with special needs.

If the student does not fulfil the requirements set by the individual study plan, their studies will be terminated due to a failure to meet study requirements on the basis of § 56, paragraph 1 b of the Law no. 111/1998 of the Higher Education Act. We recommend that students with serious medical issues contact the Department of student affairs as soon as possible and not leave dealing with this issue until the end of the academic year (September) when the requirements for continuation to the next unit of study are checked.
