The initiative European Interest Group CONCERT-Japan has announced a call for proposals of international research projects on “Oceans: Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation”. Deadline is 22. 7. 2025.

Participation of Czech entities will be funded by the Ministry of Education Youth and Sports (MEYS).

If you plan to participate in a proposal, please, contact as soon as possible, 1 month before the deadline at the latest, the Project Management Department (Martina Holíková, martina.holikova@natur.cuni.cz), so that all the formal requirements of the application can be prepared in time.

If you consider coordinating a project, please contact us immediately if possible, ca. 2–3 months before the deadline at the very latest.

The call aims to support research that addresses global warming mitigation and adaptation in marine environments. The projects should focus on one or both of these subtopics:

  • Subtopic 1: Using Blue Carbon Ecosystems for CO2 Removal
  • Subtopic 2: Understanding Ocean Processes for Climate Change Adaptation

At least 3 partners must participate in a project, 1 from Japan and 2 from 2 different European countries participating in the call. Project duration is up to 3 years (expected project beginning in April 2026). It is expected that 6 projects will be funded.
Each partner must fulfil the eligibility criteria of their national funding body.

Countries participating in the call: Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czechia, Estonia, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Türkiye – and Japan.

Maximal grant amount from MEYS for the Czech part of a project is EUR 200 000 for the whole project duration (MEYS allocation for this call is EUR 600 000).

The proposal is submitted by the coordinator on behalf of the whole consortium via the online platform. Czech participants do not need to submit a parallel application to MEYS – after the results of the international evaluation will have been published, MEYS will launch a formal call for Czech teams involved in consortia selected for funding at the international level (it can be assumed that this call will be a formal one and that the teams successful in the international evaluation will receive funding from MEYS).
