Research focused on hazardous geomorphological processes, landslides and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs); geohazards related to climate change and deglaciation. Regionally focused work mainly in Peru and the use of RS methods in Central Asia.

International cooperation with UNESCO, Vice President of the International Consortium on GeoDisaster Reduction, holder of the World Centre of Excellence on Landslide Disaster Reduction within the International Consortium on Landslides, member of doctoral study boards at the universities of Florence and Pavia, project evaluator for national grant agencies in Switzerland, Slovenia, and France.
