Unit: Zoology of Vertebrates

Specialization: phylogeography, biogeography, population, landscape and conservation genetics and genomics, mammals (especially the radiation Laurasiatheria)

Research focus: Our research group studies in particular the mechanisms of the emergence and extinction of mammalian biodiversity in the Pleistocene and Anthropocene. This includes the topic of speciation and differentiation of populations, island biogeography, hybridization and admixture, the viability of small populations and the extinction vortex. The methodological focus lies in DNA analyses, but we also use data on phenotypes and the environment. In terms of taxonomy and field research methodology, our group is focused on the research of large carnivores (and other large mammals), cetology, research of medium-sized mammals with defensive anti-predation strategies and chiropterology. We participate in long-term field research (e.g. Mediterranean, Africa, Carpathians, etc.). We also deal with more general aspects of predator ecology, the topic of rewilding and human-wildlife conflict.

Teaching: I am the guarantor of the zoology study program and have long been lecturing in various capacities on the courses Vertebrate Zoology, Vertebrate Evolution, Evolutionary and Systematic Zoology, Biogeography, Molecular Applications in Zoology, Field Course in Zoology
