Area of expertise: cognition and personality, cognitive neuroethology, animal-evoked emotions and phobias, ethology
Research: I have long been studying cognitive competence, hierarchy and personality in birds (pigeons) and selected reptiles (especially geckos). In recent years I have also been researching the emotions that animals evoke in humans, both in terms of subjective experience and objective measurement (neurophysiology, fMRI). In the context of negative emotions, I have been studying the origin and prevalence of specific animal-induced phobias, in particular phobias of snakes and spiders. I have authored chapters in the books Chemical Signals in Vertebrates, Encyclopedia of Quality of Life and Well-Being, Endangered Species - New Research, Beauty and the Animal, The Brain and Its Human, and The Mind and Its Disease. In 2024, I contributed two chapters to a new university textbook, Ethology.
Teaching: I am the guarantor of the Specialized Seminar in Ethology and Ecology and the Inter-University Methodological Seminar. I am involved in teaching Ethology and Sociobiology (for the Czech course and ERASMUS programme), Cognitive Neuroethology, Ethology Basics I. I also teach practical courses, Practical Course in Ethology and Sociobiology, Ethological Methods I, Sociobiology and Behavioural Ecology II, Practical Course in Ecomorphology and Evolutionary Biology, Practical Course in Animal Morphology and Field Practice in Zoology.
