Charles University has announced the laureates of the Bedřich Hrozný Award for an outstanding creative achievement for 2025. We are delighted to share that among the awardees are also our colleagues from the Faculty of Science, Professor Ivan Čepička ang Mgr. Marek Valt. Their discovery significantly enriches current understanding of the evolution of eukaryotic organism.

The Academic Senate of the Faculty of Science expresses its support for the position of the Learned Society of the Czech Republic, Council of Higher Education (RVŠ), Czech Rectors Conference (ČKR), Charles University, and other academic institutions regarding the draft law on the mandatory registration of entities collaborating with foreign partners, which would have significant negative impacts on international cooperation in the fields of higher education, science, and research. The Academic Senate of the Faculty of Science at Charles University endorses the call by the aforementioned bodies and institutions addressed to the Government of the Czech Republic to halt the preparation of this bill.

“Metropolitan areas are engines of growth and innovation not only for their regions, but for the whole of Europe.” This motto guided the international conference in Brno, which last Thursday concluded the three-year MECOG-CE project. The Faculty of Science of Charles University, as one of nine key partners, was an essential participant. The Dean of the Faculty, Associate Professor Vladimír Krylov, signed a Memorandum on further cooperation, ensuring that the faculty’s scientific capacities will continue to shape the development of European urban areas.

The teams of Prof. Tomáš Obšil from the Department of Physical and Macromolecular Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Charles University and Dr. Veronika Obšilová from the Institute of Physiology of the CAS have elucidated the mechanism by which proteins cyclin Y and 14-3-3 activate the protein kinase CDK16. The study was published in the prestigious journal Nature Communications.
