The "Group of Coordination and Bioinorganic Chemistry" is involved in the research of macrocyclic complexes for biomedical applications. The interest is mainly focused on the compounds that could be used as metal carriers in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), radiodiagnostics and radiotherapy.

The research in the organometallic and catalysis research group is concerned mainly with the design of new ferrocene ligands and studies into their structural and coordination properties. Particular attention is also paid to applications of the prepared donors in catalysis of synthetically important organic reactions.

Research in this field of material science is focused on one side on preparation and characterization of materials for non-linear optics and proton conductors (group of Prof. Němec – www).
On the other side research interests extend to actual nanomaterials – i.e. preparation and processing of new materials, mostly oxides, with potential applications in high temperature ceramics, nuclear research and industry or solid oxide fuel cells (group of Dr. Tyrpekl – www).
Moreover, the material research is extended by studying of the magnetic materials and nanoparticles in frame of fundamental research and potential biomedical and technological applications. Also the new research topic on the microsctructure of alloys and studying radiation damage of materials is in progress (group of Dr. Zákutná – www).
Photochemistry and supramolecular chemistry of porphyrinoids

The research is focused on chemistry and photochemistry of porphyrinoids, generation of singlet oxygen, host-quest interaction, supramolecular photoactive systems, new photoactive nanomaterials and applications in photodynamic therapy and photodisinfection.
Main group chemistry and catalysis

The discovery of frustrated Lewis pairs and the development of low-valent chemistry of main group elements have enabled their use in catalytic reactions that were previously inaccessible for s- and p-block compounds. In the research group of “Main group chemistry and catalysis” we prepare novel frustrated Lewis pairs and investigate their application in sequestration, reduction and valorisation of CO2, as well as in reduction of unsaturated functional groups for applications in organic synthesis.

Determination of geometric parameters (distances and angles) between atoms in the crystals. The used analytical method is single crystal structure determination.
