Nikolaos Vakirlis, Ph.D

I am a computational biologist specialized in evolutionary genomics. I have a PhD from Sorbonne
University in Paris, France and I have worked as a postdoctoral researcher in Ireland, Germany and
Greece. My main focus throughout my career has been to understand the processes by which novel
genes evolve, with a particular interest in the mechanism of de novo gene birth. I am currently a
group leader at the Hellenic Pasteur Institute in Athens, Greece, and my group investigates the
evolutionary dynamics of antimicrobial peptides across animals, processes of novel gene origination
across eukaryotes and prokaryotes, as well as noncanonical human proteins.
