Scientists have discovered a 200-meter-thick layer of volcanic ash in marine sediments near the Cyclades Islands in Greece. This “megabed” was formed 161,000 years ago after a massive eruption on Kos, when pyroclastic currents crossed the shoreline and transformed into submarine density currents that transported ash hundreds of kilometers away. The international team of geologists included Günther Kletetschka from the Faculty of Science, Charles University, and the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
