On Friday, 31 October 2025, the Academic Senate of Charles University held a ceremonial meeting in the Patriotic Hall of the Carolinum to elect a nominee for the position of Rector of Charles University. The Senate elected Professor Jiří Zima, former Dean of the Faculty of Science, as the candidate for Rector of Charles University. The Rector will be appointed by the President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel. Congratulations!

The nominees for the position of Rector of Charles University were the current Rector, Professor Milena Králíčková; Vice-Rector for Research and Creative Activities, Professor Ladislav Krištoufek; geochemist Professor Martin Mihaljevič; analytical chemist and long-time Dean of the Faculty of Science, Professor Jiří Zima; and kinanthropologist Professor František Zahálka.
In the second round of the election, which was decided between the current Rector, Professor Milena Králíčková, and Professor Jiří Zima, the vote ratio was 27 to 40 in favor of Professor Zima.
The term of office of the newly elected Rector is expected to begin in February 2026 and will last four years. The Rector will be appointed by the President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel.
