Rector awarded the best students of the University

Tuesday 1.4.2025

Interesting scientific topics, excellent study or sporting results, as well as community activities and helping others, were all recognised by the Rector of Charles University Milena Králíčková, who presented prestigious awards to students from Charles University for their extraordinary activities. Among the awardees are also many representatives of our Faculty.

The Bolzano Award is presented in three categories, and two of the awards went to our faculty:

In the natural sciences category, Dr. Martin Volek from the Faculty of Science at Charles University was awarded for his dissertation focusing on the development and application of catalytically active DNA molecules (so-called deoxyribozymes).

Dissertation title: "Development and use of deoxyribozymes that generate color and fluorescence"
Study program/field: Molecular and Cell Biology, Genetics, and Virology

The Bolzano Award in the biomedical category was awarded to Mgr. Daniela Knížková, Ph.D., from the Department of Cell Biology. Her research explores how molecules in the immune system signal and influence inflammatory processes. The aim of her work is to identify new signaling elements and describe their function in health and disease, particularly in the regulation of the inflammatory response.

Dissertation title: "Molecular mechanisms of inflammation"
Study program/field: Immunology

Prof. RNDr. Jaroslav Heyrovský Award for the Best Graduates of Science Programs:

The award was given to Mgr. Alžběta Poštulková from the Department of Botany (Master’s program  Evolutionary Biology), who, during her studies, discovered a gene in the genome of an alpine plant that could repeatedly contribute to better survival in challenging high-mountain environments across different populations.

The award was also presented to Bc. Lucia Nemčeková from the Department of Biochemistry (Bachelor’s program Biochemistry) for her research on protein interactions involved in the acylation of the RTX toxin HlyA in the uropathogenic bacterium E. coli. Her work was part of a broader study on the effects of RTX toxins, which are significant virulence factors in many Gram-negative pathogenic bacteria.

Prof. PhDr. Václav Příhoda Award for the Best Graduates of Teacher Training Programs:

For our faculty, the award was given to Bc. Petra Kalinová from the Department of Physical Geography and Geoecology (Bachelor’s program  Geography with a focus on Education – Mathematics with a focus on Education). Her thesis examined the water management situation in the Czech Republic, particularly existing water reserves and consumption, analyses of drought types, their causes, and their impacts on society within the Czech territory.
