New Memorandum of Understanding with Slavia Insurance: Improved Medical Insurance Options for International Students

Charles University has signed a new Memorandum of Understanding with Slavia Insurance, expanding medical insurance options for students from non-EU countries. The agreement includes a 10% discount and several new benefits — from psychotherapy coverage to eligibility for UJOP, Erasmus+ and Exchange students, as well as CU graduates under 35 holding a job-seeking visa.

An international team led by anthropologists from Charles University has carried out research that provides the first direct physiological measurements taken during so-called persistence hunting –⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠ an ancient hunting strategy in which humans chase down prey on foot until it collapses from exhaustion. The results, published in the Journal of Human Evolution, show that this form of hunting is energetically efficient and manageable even for a modern, non-acclimatized human.

Discovery of a rare protist reveals a previously unknown branch of the eukaryotic tree of life

A research team from the Faculty of Science, Charles University in Prague has discovered Solarion arienae, an extremely rare and morphologically unique unicellular eukaryote that sheds new light on early eukaryotic evolution. The study, published in Nature, reveals that Solarion represents a newly defined phylum and, together with a few enigmatic protist lineages, forms an entirely new eukaryotic supergroup (kingdom) named Disparia. Remarkably, Solarion preserves ancestral mitochondrial features previously thought to have long disappeared, offering an unprecedented insight into the biology of early eukaryotic cells.
