The following rules do not apply to language courses that are part of the curriculum.[1]
English courses in the Lifelong Learning programme are hereinafter referred to CŽV EN.

Full text of the CŽV EN rules
English language courses are run at the Faculty of Science, Charles University, as a non-compulsory programme of lifelong learning in accordance with § 60 of Act No. 111/1998 Sb. on Higher Education Institutions and on the Amendment and Supplementation of Other Acts (Higher Education Act), the Constitution of Charles University, Charles University Rules for Lifelong Learning, Dean’s measures on lifelong learning and other internal regulations of Charles University.
CŽV EN is non-compulsory, i.e. optional for students and not part of the curriculum. The programme is not included in the credit point system (ECTS) – successful completion does not qualify the student for credit points.
The programme provides courses on several levels of English language proficiency. The level of the first course of the programme is determined for each student by the use of a placement test.
Students make a financial contribution to the courses (hereinafter referred to as fee), which is determined by the Faculty for a given academic year. The fee amounts for the 2024/2025 academic year are provided in the table at the end of these instructions. The subsidy provided by the Faculty is not conditional upon successful completion of the course. A given course level is subsidised by the Faculty once only. If the student does not complete a given level, they can retake the course by paying the full amount of the fee, i.e. with no subsidy from the Faculty. A student who has not completed a given level of a course cannot enrol for the next level unless they take a placement test that applies in a given academic year and that will demonstrate that they have reached the necessary level of language proficiency independently. The maximum length of study is 4 semesters for bachelor’s and master’s degree students and 6 semesters for doctoral students. In total a student can study for 10 semesters.
Participation in CŽV EN
In order to enrol in the CŽV EN life long learning programme one needs to be a full-time student of the bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral study programme at the Faculty of Science, Charles University (not combined study and not an exchange student). The student needs to have a valid CAS password. New students receive the password when enrolling for a study programme.
All communication with a student in the CŽV EN programme is done via e-mail. For this reason, it is necessary that a student provides their current e-mail address in the SIS system.
Participation in CŽV EN:
- taking a placement test
- assigning students to courses based on proficiency level
- apply for the CŽV EN programme in SIS
- selecting a timetable and payment
- beginning of study
- end of study
Stage 1 – taking a placement test
Placement tests are done in Moodle between 12.8. and 30.8.2024. If the student has CAS login information (i.e. they have a Charles University student ID), they use them to log in. If the student has not received CAS login information yet (i.e. they have not yet received a Charles University student ID), they log into Moodle as a new user by using the registration form. Accepting a student into a given course is conditional upon taking the placement test. The placement test needs to be taken also by students who:
- have attended a course but have not completed it
- have attended and completed a course, but are applying for the follow-up course with one-year delay
* The students exempted from taking the placement test are those who successfully completed a CŽV EN course in the 2023/2024 academic year (those students only need to sign up for a course in the SIS system) and those who hold an internationally recognised language certificate (no older than 2 years). In order to confirm that they hold a certificate, a student needs to e-mail its scan to the Head of the Department of Languages at the Faculty of Science (irena.antonova@ujop.cuni.cz) between 12.8. and 30. 8. 2024. The e-mail should contain the student’s name, surname, field of study, and UKČO or date of birth (only those beginning their study at the Faculty of Science in 2024/2025 academic year). Please do not forget to attach the scan of the certificate.
Taking a placement test is one of the requirements for enrolling into the CŽV EN programme and is free of charge.
In order to test their approximate level of English proficiency, a student can take a shorter version of the test here (this version provides a rough estimate of the student’s level - taking the placement test is necessary for a more precise evaluation).
Stage 2 – assigning students to courses based on proficiency level
Students will receive their placement test results via e-mail no later than 2. 9. 2024. Placement test results will also be available in Moodle. Test results are final. A student can only request the results to be reviewed if their score is max. 2 points below the limit required for a higher level. The results are reviewed by the Head of the Department of Languages (Irena Antonová - irena.antonova@ujop.cuni.cz) between 4. 9. and 6. 9. 2024 online. Requests made after this date will not be considered.
Stage 3 – apply for the CŽV EN programme in SIS
Students sign up for the CŽV EN programme using the electronic application form in SIS. To log into SIS you must use your login and password. Create your application using the "Přijímací řízení" (“Admission procedure”) tab. Next, you will be asked to sign up for the non-compulsory programme "Anglický jazyk (úroveň K1 - K7)" (“English language (levels K1-K7)”). Then, you will be shown a timetable based on the proficiency level determined by the placement test (it will appear in an external application).
Stage 4 – selecting a timetable and payment
Students select a timetable following the instructions received via e-mail and which will also be made available on the CŽV EN website. This takes place between 12.9. and 25.9.2024. If a given course time is selected by less than 8 people, the Faculty reserves the right to cancel the course and reassign the student to a course of the same level at a different time.
Once the summer semester starts, students enrolled in one-semester courses also log into the external application and select a timetable valid for the summer semester. They will receive an e-mail with instructions – available timetables and payment instructions, in mid-January. IN THIS CASE, YOU SHOULD MAKE THE PAYMENT IN JANUARY/FEBRUARY ACCORDING TO YOUR INSTRUCTIONS.
Payments can be made by bank transfer or in cash at the university cash desk by 25. 9. 2024.
Students who have not paid the specified amount by 25. 9. 2024 will not be accepted into the CŽV EN programme.
The amount of the fee is specified in an e-mail sent out to the student and is determined on the basis of the table provided at the end of these instructions. The fee cannot be reduced or waived.
If a student interrupts their study or goes abroad while the programme is running, they lose the right to complete or replace a course and the right to a refund (full or partial) for a course that has already been paid for. The same applies if a student decides to stop participating in the programme for whatever reason. The student may only apply for a refund to be paid within 14 days of the start of the course, i.e. by 14.10.2024. Requests made after this date will not be considered. Requests for a refund should be sent to veronika.fialova@natur.cuni.cz. To make the payment and refund easier to trace, attach payment confirmation to the e-mail.
Students of two-semester courses who stop attending in the summer semester for whatever reason are not entitled to a refund. This also applies if the course overlaps with the student’s timetable from their study programme. Transitions between parallel courses of the same level will be made possible.
Stage 5 – beginning of study
30.9. 2024 - beginning of study
Students attend 90-min. classes once / twice a week for 12 weeks (one semester). Classes take place in Albertov.
Stage 6 – end of study
If the student meets all the necessary requirements, they receive a certificate which confirms they have completed the CŽV EN programme at the end of the course (it is not a language proficiency certificate). Course requirements will be provided by the teacher at the beginning of the course. If the student does not complete the course for whatever reason, they are no longer eligible for the faculty subsidy on a course of the same level in the following year and will be required to take the placement test again (see above).

Footnotes:
[1] In the case of bachelor’s degree students who enrolled in a study programme before 2014 and whose curriculum requires them to take an English exam or gain credit points from an English course, the curriculum and the study rules that applied at the time of their enrolment remain unchanged. In the case of doctoral study programmes, the requirement to take a language exam is determined by the relevant specialisation board. In both cases, however, students may concurrently participate in English language courses as part of the Lifelong Learning programme under the same conditions as students without the requirement to undergo language instruction or examination.
