Czech scientific hopes scored in Luxembourg
The EOES (European Olympiad of Experimental Science) competition is open to teams of three, each consisting of a chemist, a biologist and a physicist, aged 17 years or less. They work together during the competition week to solve two very challenging problems that are experimentally oriented and require a comprehensive knowledge of all three disciplines. Two competition teams are usually sent from each participating country.
At international competitions, it is customary that gold medals are given to about 10% of the top teams, silver medals to about 30% of the other teams, and the remaining teams receive bronze medals.
Teams from the Czech Republic have regularly achieved great results in this competition, winning gold and silver medals for several years in a row. This year, in a competition of 45 teams from 23 European Union countries and one team from Ukraine, our B team won silver medals for 16th place out of a total of 46, and our A team was the overall winner of this competition!
The student teams were made up of the best 17-year-old participants in the Biology, Physics and Chemistry Olympiads. Based on the training camp held in Hradec Králové, two teams were selected, in which students from secondary schools from Prague, Brno, Dvůr Králové nad Labem and České Budějovice were represented. Prof. Jan Kotek (Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Charles University), dr. Tereza Matějková (Biology, Faculty of Science, Charles University) and doc. Jan Kříž (Physics, University of Hradec Králové).
