Workshop: Advanced EM - 3D imaging

Czech scientific hopes scored in Luxembourg

The European Olympiad of Experimental Sciences (EOES), in which the best teams of young high school students from the European Union and Ukraine compete, took place this year in Luxembourg. With the participation of mentors from the Czech national rounds of the Olympiads (most of them from the Faculty of Science of Charles University), the Czech high school students brought home gold and silver medals. The golden Czechs even became the absolute winners of the whole competition! Congratulations!

Charles University has moved up in the prestigious international rankings, earth sciences in particular are now top scorers

According to the newly published international QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024, Charles University has improved in three fields. In particular, Charles University improved in the fields of history, linguistics and philosophy compared to 2023. It is now among the best schools in the global comparison in the fields of archaeology, geology, geophysics and earth sciences.

An innovative approach to planar chiral substances

Dr. Vojtěch Dočekal and Prof. Jan Veselý from the Department of Organic Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Charles University described a new highly efficient method for the preparation of planar chiral compounds. The method based on organocatalytic desymmetrization was published in the prestigious journal Nature Communications. Congratulations!

The prestigious John Maynard Smith Prize was awarded to Magdalena Bohutínská

Each year, the European Society for Evolutionary Biology awards the John Maynard Smith Prize to an outstanding young evolutionary biologist. This year the winner of this prestigious prize is Magdalena Bohutínská, Ph.D. from the Department of Botany, who is currently a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions Fellow at the University of Bern. Congratulations!

Volcanic craters are not as “sleepy” as scientists thought

There is a hypothesis that says that after a major volcanic eruption, it takes a long time for a new one to form. It doesn’t always have to be the case though. A new study published in a prestigious scientific journal Nature Geoscience shows that volcanic craters are able to produce a large amount of material even relatively shortly after a major eruption. Günther Kletetschka from the Faculty of Science, Charles University was part of an international team conducting this research.

4EU+ alliance, the Cotutelle program: Call for projects 2024

Within the 4EU+ alliance, the Cotutelle program is offered - joint supervision of doctoral theses, in which the student has one supervisor from the home university and one supervisor from a foreign university, and it is their obligation to spend part of their studies at both institutions.
