The merger of two polyploids is better than the sum of their parts
Plant evolutionary biologists from the Department of Botany (Roswitha Schmickl and Magdalena Bohutínská), together with collaborators from the United Kingdom (John Innes Centre and the Universities of Nottingham, Leicester and Cambridge), found an intriguing role of introgressive hybridisation in adaptation to whole genome duplication (WGD). Specific, bidirectional adaptive gene flow affected loci known to be essential for processes that are impacted by WGD: meiotic stability, endopolyploidy, and transcription. The paper was recently published in Nature Communications.
